Questions owners ask

What selling to Habile involves, in plain terms.

What happens to my staff?

They keep working for the same business. The new CEO meets you before you sign, and the handover is planned around your people. We will not promise that no role ever changes, but we do not buy businesses to cut them.

Can I keep a stake in the business?

In some deals, yes. Some owners prefer to keep part of the business after the sale and share in what comes next. Whether that works depends on the business and the deal, so we talk it through early. Where it does, you become our partner in the business's next chapter, and the stake is set out in heads of agreement.

I own the premises. What happens to them?

You can keep them. Where it suits both sides, the business can lease them from you after the sale on commercial terms, so you keep the property and an income from it.

Do I have to stay on?

For a transition period that we agree with you before signing, planned at about 4 months. The new CEO runs the business full-time from completion, so you are handing over, not staying on to run it.

How are my customers and suppliers handed over?

You and the new CEO plan it together before completion: who you introduce them to, in what order, and what you tell them. During the transition period you introduce the CEO to your key customers and suppliers yourself.

How is the price set?

From what the business earns, checked in due diligence. Part of the price can depend on how the business performs after the sale. If it does, that part is set out in heads of agreement, before due diligence starts.

What does due diligence involve?

Our accountants and lawyers check the accounts, contracts, staff arrangements and customers. It happens after heads of agreement, under a confidentiality agreement.

Will my staff or customers hear about it?

Not from us until you agree. We do not contact your staff, customers or suppliers without your permission.

What about tax?

Your tax depends on how you and the business hold its shares and assets, so we do not advise on it. Your accountant should work out your after-tax position before heads of agreement, and we are happy to speak with them.
